Mark this. On the 12th of October 2020, I started my first official job after graduation. I got the offer to work in a software company as a Junior Data Scientist. All my hard work of studying has paid off and I couldn’t be happier. If you have been following my data science journey you’d know how I started and probably appreciate where I have reached thus far. I was not entirely sure of how this article should go but I have decided now, to take you on a reflective journey. As I did on one Friday at work with my colleagues, I’ll share with you how and why I chose to learn Data Science. Welcome to my TED Talk.
I studied Computer Engineering at Ashesi University in Ghana. It was quite the journey. After graduating, I came across the Azubi Africa program which was to train people in the fields of Data Science or Software Development. I picked Data Science. This was when I began to document my journey. Due to struggles with coding in the university, I was sure I wouldn’t touch anything close to that skill. Data Science did not look like too much of coding work and so I decided to try it out. This was not entirely true though as I learnt. Through documentation and sharing my work, I inspired a good number of people to start stuff of their own, in and out of the field of Data Science. I also earned myself some mentors to guide me on the journey of which I am grateful.
I graduated from the Azubi Africa program in the topmost Platinum class.
My work environment is so much fun. The people I work with are incredible to say the least. They are smart, get their work done, and know how to have a good time. I am learning to use new technologies in a rather short amount of time in order to work on up and coming projects. It’s a task I’m not afraid to take up. I enjoy learning and my colleagues and superiors make it very easy for me to ask questions. I agree I have gained a lot of knowledge but there is so much more out there that I don’t even know that I don’t know. So, I am gearing myself up to start this new phase of my life.
I am going to learn as much as I can on the job, deliver as expected & exceed expectation, help people along the way, and enjoy the ride. It is important to find what you love by trying a lot of things that you possibly can. That way, you learn what you like and do not like. That way, you fit yourself in places you believe you will thrive. When I go to the office, as voluminous as the work may seem, it doesn’t feel daunting. It only feels like I am doing what I love to do. It doesn’t even feel like ‘work’, if you know what I mean. I believe that should be your goal as well. Schöne Woche. More articles coming your way.
